Our Philosophy
At Seville Primary School, we believe strong English skills are the foundation for success across every area of learning. Every student can become a confident, capable reader, writer and communicator through clear, consistent teaching from Foundation to Year 6, guided by proven teaching practices recommended by the Victorian Department of Education.
Our classrooms are engaging learning spaces where literature is immersive. Every reading and writing experience gives students the chance to connect with the text, connect with their own personal experiences, and connect with the world around them, sparking rich conversations that build critical thinking and communication skills.
Our Approach
At Seville Primary School, students receive daily phonics lessons and reading instruction. Phonics – learning how letters and sounds work together – is taught from Foundation to Year 2, with spelling instruction continuing right through to Year 6. Phonics, spelling and reading are taught together, using the key building blocks of reading: listening and speaking, recognising the sounds in words, recognising the letters that make the sounds, becoming fluent readers, exploring vocabulary and comprehending what they read.
Writing instruction follows the same step-by-step approach where teachers model the skill, students practise together, then try it on their own, followed by feedback that coaches students through misconceptions and celebrates student success. Students learn grammar and punctuation to craft strong sentences, and they read high-quality texts to inspire their own writing. Regular diary writing and other creative writing opportunities help students build stamina and fluency as they develop their own voice.
Our English program follows a consistent plan across the whole school, so teaching builds logically from one year level to the next and meets the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Teachers and Education Support Officers work closely with students to support and extend students and adjust the teaching to promote growth.
Supporting Your Child at Home
Families play an important role in supporting English learning. You can help your child further develop their literacy skills through regular home reading and spelling practice, and by encouraging any interest in writing, such as writing a shopping list, diary entry, creating fun recipes or creative writing. Home practice reinforces the learning taking place at school and deepens your child’s understandings and skills, while building their confidence as learners.
